Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Purdue Boilermakers
College Football Power Rankings: Week 5
Total Pro Sports – What a week it was! 4 top 10′s lose, huge wins for teams on the bubble of breaking through the top 25 College Football Power Rankings, and a whole lot of excitement this week in college football.
It started with the shocker in Corvallis, and finished with stunner in Athens, but in between all that chaos we had some unbelievable upsets. Florida went down at the hands of Ole Miss, and the Badgers couldn’t hold off the Wolverines. It’s weeks like this that keep viewers tuned in every Saturday, the optimism for unpredictability.
Our Top 25 College Football Power Rankings have undergone a complete makeover, and we stacked the teams with which we feel are deserving of these spots. Oklahoma is our undisputed no.1 let us see if they can hold that spot for more than a week.
Our biggest winners this week in our College Power Rankings, were the Penn State Nittany Lions moving up 6 spots after a big win against Illinois. The LSU Tigers, and the Alabama Crimson Tide all moved up 3 spots respectively.
Our biggest losers this week in our College Football Power Rankings for week 5 was the Wisconsin Badgers dropping 8 spots to #17, after losing in the “Big House” against the Michigan Wolverines. The USC Trojans and the Georgia Bulldogs lost 5 spots in the college power rankings respectively.
|1||4-0||1||With USC losing, Oklahoma went into its game with TCU knowing what a win would mean. They came out with a decisive 35-10 victory and move into first place in the power rankings. The offense led by Sam Bradford looked great again even against a tough TCU defence. Up Next: Baylor Bears|
|2||4-0||4||LSU probably didn’t expect to find themselves in the top 3 this week, but with USC, Georgia, and Florida losing all it took was a win against Mississippi State. LSU has a big game next week at Florida, a game that will have to be prepared for after the Gators were upset this week.|
|3||4-0||3||Missouri was able to avoid a loss this week, the reason? They had a week off. With all the shenanigan’s this weekend offered I think Mizzu was lucky to have a bye week. Despite not playing they moved up 3 spots in the poll. Up Next: Nebraska Cornhuskers|
|4||5-0||4||How can you not rave about this team? They have shown improvement in every game they have played and I wonder if they hit their climax this week? Alabama completely owned the 3rd ranked Bulldogs, what makes it more impressive is they did it in Athens, Georgia. Look out ahead, Bama’ is coming through full throttle. Up Next: Kentucky Wildcats|
|5||4-0||2||Another dominant display by the Longhorns as Colt McCoy looked near unstoppable. He threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for 2 more as Texas clobbered its border rival 52-10. Up next: Colorado Buffaloes|
|6||2-1||5||We all know the story by now the Trojans had a massive letdown following their huge win against Ohio State. It was at the hands of the Beavers, the same situation that occurred in 06′. The Trojans are still a force to wreckened with however, expect a shootout next week when they host the Ducks of Oregon. Up Next: Oregon Ducks|
|7||4-1||5||The Bulldogs were manhandled by the Crimson Tide. The score did not show the domination on the field by the Crimson Tide. The game plan was thrown out the window after trailing in the first half by 31 points. They have no time to hang their heads as they host the always tough Volunteers next week.|
|8||3-1||4||What a heartbreaking defeat for the Gators. To lose the game on a blocked extra point really hurts, but an emotional Tim Tebow refused to let the media attack his kicker instead he blamed himself for not making a huge 4th down conversion late in the game. Up Next: Arkansas Razorbacks|
|9||5-0||2||Another week, another win for the Bulls, this time it was against possibly their toughest road test of the young season as they beat NC State. The Bulls seem to play very well against stiffer competition they have to bring the same energy every week. Up Next: Pittsburgh Panthers|
|10||5-0||6||The Blue and White are spanking teams every week it seems. This time the attack was led by Derrick Williams the speedy “Mr. Everything” scored a passing, rushing and kick return touchdown as the Nittany Lions rolled in Happy Valley. Up Next: Purdue Boilermakers|
|11||4-0||1||Week off. they play @ K-State next week. Up Next: Kansas State Wildcats|
|12||4-1||-||“Beanie” Wells returns and the Buckeyes run wild! The Buckeyes rushed for a season high 279 yards and Terrelle Pryor played very well for a second straight game. Up Next: Wisconsin Badgers|
|13||4-0||1||The Utes remained unbeaten and kept their BCS Bowl Game bid alive. I expect this team to have a chance to run the table entering it’s game against TCU on Nov. 6. Up Next: Oregon State Beavers|
|14||4-0||1||They had a bye week, which will give Max Hall and the offense a chance to cool off. That’s good news for Utah St because this offense has been on fire. Up Next: Utah State Aggies|
|15||4-1||-||What was expected to be a defensive slug fest did not dissapoint as the Tigers squeked out a victory. The biggest plays of the game came in the final moments when Auburn recovered a fumble in the end zone and converted for 10 yards on 3rd and 5 to run out the clock. Up Next: Vanderbilt Commodores|
|16||3-1||1||They had a week off. They travel to Iowa to play the Cyclones next week. Up Next: Iowa State Cyclones|
|17||3-1||8||What a major meltdown for the Badgers in Ann Arbor. I guess the Badgers felt the game was over in the third quarter. There are a lot of people in Madison that are furious with the way this team finished the game. It is for this reason you cannot let up at any point of a football because momentum is a factor that you don’t want to be reversed. Up Next: Ohio State|
|18||4-1||1||Ya they whipped a dismal Washington St team, but let’s be reminded they did it with their third string quarterback. This team can still win games, with USC losing its first game of the season I’m not counting the Ducks out of the running for a PAC-10 championship. Up Next: USC Trojans|
|19||5-0||NR||What a fourth quarter they played. They lost their starting quarterback early in the game and showed no sign of quite as they rallied to beat Louisville. Donald Brown is the real deal, if continues to the run the ball the way he is doing, coupled with an opportunistic defence this team will be hard to beat. Up Next: North Carolina|
|20||3-1||3||This is a scrappy football team that continues to win games. Pat Hill has had this program moving in the right direction for multiple years now. They have opened the eyes of big name schools, with their feisty play and hard nose attitude they have no reason to fear anyone. Up Next: Hawaii|
|21||3-0||2||They had a week off. Up Next: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs|
|22||4-0||3||They had a week off, they play Auburn at home next week a big game for the programs progress. Up Next: Auburn Tigers|
|23||4-0||NR||They are not just winning games their blowing out their opponents. This week they abused a good Troy football team. The Cowboys are putting a massive amount of points, I predict they score 58 points next week. Up Next: Texas A&m|
|24||3-1||6||A tough loss for the Demon Deacons this week as Navy controlled the line of scrimmage all game, and Riley Skinner made way too many mistakes to overcome.|
|25||4-1||NR||After an opening season loss to East Carolina, Virginia Tech has won some impressive games, including road victories at UNC and Nebraska. “Beamer Ball” is back and hopefully the Hookies can continue to play well. Up Next: Western Kentucky|
Honorable Mention: Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan State, Tulsa, Air Force, California, Arizona, and Kentucky.
