They Could Hab It All

Alexi KovalevThis time last year, most experts didn’t even have them making the playoffs, but after an Eastern Conference championship and a plethora of youth, the Montreal Canadians are one of the favorites to contend for Lord Stanley.

It’s been 15 years since Les Habitant have hoisted what is arguably the most difficult prize in all sports, but with the additions of Alex Tanguay, Robert Lang, Georges Laraque and the ever improving youth in the Canadians locker room, the question on everyone’s mind is; are these guys for real?

Alex Tanguay has been regarded as one of the best left wingers in the entire NHL, but after a disappointing 07/08 season in Calgary, he is looking to rebound in the city where he grew up. With four 70+ point seasons, there is no question that Tanguay has the capabilities to be an impact player.

Bob Gainey made some headlines with the late summer signing of Robert Lang from the Blackhawks. A former line-mate of Montreal star Alex Kovalev, where they both enjoyed some of their most productive seasons. Lang brings experience and depth to the Canadians lineup.

George Laraque is arguably the toughest player in the league, and gives Montreal that much needed fourth-line enforcer. Another native of Montreal, Laraque comes to the Canadians after a run to the finals with the Penguins last season. He does have the ability to score a few goals, but his main role will be protecting the skilled forwards.

Bob Gainey has showed the dedicated fans that he is serious about this team, and the rebuilding years are over. The Canadians now have 3 solid scoring lines, and are backed by the impressive Carey Price.  Whatever happens this season, these are exciting times for the city of Montreal, and I think we can all say: Yes they are for real!
