2008/09 Washington Capitals Season Preview
1. Washington Capitals Season Preview
Not a shocker here. They finished first last year and I expect them to do it again this year. Although they could get some good competition from Tampa once they gel together.
The Capitals have arguably the best player in the game with Alexander Ovechkin and he developed some great chemistry with Nicklas Backstrom last year. Alexander Semin will look to stay healthy and take the pressure off of Ovechkin and Backstrom playing on the 2nd line. While the veterans Sergei Fedorov, Chris Clark, Michael Nylander and tough guy Donald Brashear will add some stability to the group.
On defence is where Washington could use some help. Mike Green had a great year last season, but after that there’s a big drop off. John Erskine and Shaone Morrisonn add some toughness and physical play to the blueline while the young guys like Milan Jurcina and Jeff Schultz will look to improve from last year. Karl Alzner will be a big part of the blueline in the future, but after being sent down to the AHL he wont have a big impact this year.
The biggest change is in net, which isn’t exactly a good thing. Jose Theodore and Brent Johnson are a decent tandem, but a drop off from the Huet & Kolzig tandem they finished off with last season.
Just like with any team depending on young players, if they can stay healthy and improve they should make some noise in the East. They’ll also have to hope to get some solid goaltending from Jose Theodore.
