2008/09 New York Islanders Season Preview
5. New York Islanders Season Preview
Not much can be said about this team. They’ll be battling with Toronto, Los Angeles and Atlanta for the #1 overall pick in this year’s entry draft.
Just like the Leafs, the Islanders will be looking to get their offence from a group of players rather than just two or three individuals. Mike Comrie, Bill Guerin, Doug Weight and Trent Hunter make up parts of their top 6. Youngsters like Jeff Tambellini, Blake Comeau and Kyle Okposo will look to play fairly big roles on this team as it starts to rebuild.
At first glance the forwards look like New York’s biggest weakness, but it is definitely defence. Newly acquired Mark Streit will lead the offensive charge from the blueline with some help from Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais. Radek Martinek, Brendan Witt, Andy Sutton, Freddy Meyer and Thomas Pock round out the defence.
The one place the Islanders don’t have to worry about is in net with Rick DiPietro. Joey MacDonald is 28 but has very little NHL experience which might come back to haunt the Islanders if DiPietro goes down due to injury.
No matter how you look at it, this Islanders team is far from contending and in this tough division even a miracle wont help them make the playoffs.
