UFC Changes Vaseline RulesTotal Pro Sports – Great work by the UFC to respond do a very real problem in the sport. MMA being still very young in general terms must evolve to a polished, well governed product like the NFL.

People sometimes have issued with NFL’s policies, and their sometimes harsh disciplinary measures. But from a business standpoint you can’t argue with their revenues and profits. All this while still delivering a very solid product. The UFC needs to govern every aspect of MMA, so that both fighters walking into the cage win based on skill and will, and nothing else.

…the UFC has instituted new policies regarding cut men and how the corners are allowed to enter during the breaks in between rounds for this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 17 show in Tampa, Fla.

According to sources close to the situation, the UFC has now instructed that cornermen associated with the fighters will no longer be allowed to handle the Vaseline used in between rounds to treat and prevent cuts.

The UFC will now provide one cut man for each corner for the fight. Only two people are allowed to enter the Octagon between rounds so if a cut man is necessary to apply Vaseline or work on a cut, one of the other cornermen working with the fighter must exit the cage to allow the cut man to work. As far as the rule itself, it is very reasonable. Your main corner-man is still able to be present in the ring at all times between rounds. The other corner-man simply needs to leave if Vaseline is needed or there is a cut. Making the cut-man a third party, which is good for the integrity of the sport.

The octagon, the rules, the cage, they all favour wrestlers that can work the clinch. It would be nice to have the UFC also allow pants in the ring to even it up for the BJ guys. We would see alot more submissions from the bottom, especially with guys like Penn, Hazelett, Maia, Palhares. But thats just a personal thing. And bring Shinya Aoki over UFC!  So BJ can have someone to worry about at lightweight.
