2009 NHL Trade Deadline Trades And Grades

by: AnthonyP On  Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Total Pro Sports – The 2009 NHL trade deadline has officially come and gone.  It was a slow NHL trade deadline this year with only 21 trades being made.

The biggest winner of the day were the Calgary Flames who added Olli Jokinen and Jordan Leopold.  The biggest seller of the day were the cash strapped Phoenix Coyotes who dumped a whole bunch of salary for young players and draft picks.

Lets take a look at the rest of the trades that took place today.

Team Player Team Player Comments
Toronto Maple Leafs G Olaf Kolzig, D Jamie Heward, D Andy Rogers, 2009 fourth-round pick Tampa Bay Lightning Richard Petiot, D
The Lighting need cash and the NHL does not allow teams to trade for money, so this was a way the Lighting can shed some salary off their books.
Edmonton Oilers RW Ales Kotalik Buffalo Sabres 2009 second-round pick Edmonton gets a solid winger that can easily score 20 plus goals if he plays with the right players.
San Jose Sharks LW Travis Moen, D Kent Huskins Anaheim Ducks G Timo Pielmeier, C Nick Bonino, 2009 conditional draft pick Travis Moen is a grinder the Sharks will be pleased with this acquisition as they go deep into the playoffs.
Philadelphia Flyers D Kyle McLaren San Jose Sharks 2009 sixth-round pick Hopefully McLaren can find himself playing for the Flyers because he was playing with the Sharks AHL team before this trade.
Chicago Blackhawks C Samuel Pahlsson Anaheim Ducks D James Wisniewski, conditional draft pick If the Blackhawks are looking to make a deep push into the playoffs the addition of Pahlsson will definitely help them.
Florida Panthers D Steve Eminger Tampa Bay Lightning D Noah Welch 2009 third-round pick Eminger again finds himself traded again this time to the Panthers.  A nice move for the Panthers, but we recommend that you keep your bags packed kid.
Buffalo Sabres C Dominic Moore Toronto Maple Leafs 2009 second-round pick Moore is a solid pickup for the Sabres.  He gives them 150% every time he steps onto the ice.
New York Rangers D Derek Morris Phoenix Coyotes D Dmitri Kalinin, LW Petr Prucha, LW Nigel Dawes The New York Rangers give up a lot for Morris.  Hopefully he can return the favor and help the Rangers make a run for the cup.
New York Rangers RW Nik Antropov Toronto Maple Leafs 2009 second-round pick, conditional draft pick So long Antropov your time was a waste in Toronto.
Philadelphia Flyers LW Daniel Carcillo Phoenix Coyotes LW Scottie Upshall, 2009 second-round pick A nice pick up for both teams, the Flyers will love Carcillo on their side.
Pittsburgh Penguins RW Bill Guerin New York Islanders 2009 conditional pick (fifth-, fourth- or third-round) The Islanders finally find a team for Bill Guerin.
Boston Bruins RW Mark Recchi, 2010 second-round pick Tampa Bay Lightning D Matt Lashoff, RW Martin Karsums The veteran leadership of Mark Recchi will help the Bruins when they make their push for the Stanley Cup.
Calgary Flames C Olli Jokinen, 2009 third-round pick Phoenix Coyotes C Matthew Lombardi, RW Brandon Prust, 2009 or 2010 first-round pick (Calgary’s option) The Flames we think are now a top 5 team in the NHL with the aquisiton of Jokinen.
Buffalo Sabres G Mikael Tellqvist Phoenix Coyotes 2009 fourth-round pick Tellqvist will make a nice backup to Ryan Miller
Calgary Flames D Jordan Leopold Colorado Avalanche D Lawrence Nycholat, D Ryan Wilson, 2009 second-round pick (previously acquired) The Flames contiue to improve with Leopold returning to the Flames..
Columbus Blue Jackets C Antoine Vermette Ottawa Senators G Pascal Leclaire, 2009 second-round pick A nice addition for both team, both will be pleased.
