USA Makes Confederation Cup Semis…Did I Miss Something?

usa-vs-egypt-confederations-cupTotal Pro Sports – They started out the first game well, leading Italy 1-0 after the half while playing down a man, but it all seemed to go down hill from there for the USA men’s soccer team.  They would allow three second half goals in that game, losing 3-1 to the Azzuri.  Just three days later is was Brazil laying a beating on the American side, easily taking care of them 3-0.  All hope of advancing seemed lost.  That was prior to the unfolding of  Sunday’s miraculous event.

It looked as though it would be between Brazil, Italy and Egypt to determine who was advancing to the semi-finals from group B of the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.  Brazil led with 6 points followed by 3 apiece for Italy and Egypt, and none for the US.  That didn’t stop the American side from coming out hard and their 3-0 victory over Egypt was only half the reason for their survival.  What was the other half?  A complete debacle by the Italian side in the first half of their match against Brazil, which was being played at the same time.

Italy went down 3-0 in the opening half and although they were out of this game, they still held a chance at advancing with just one goal.  Unfortunately, the only thing they seemed to be able to do right was keep their shorts on, as that goal would never come and the resulting 3-way tie for second in the group would be decided by the four goals scored by the USA in group play, one more than the three scored by Italy.

The Americans will now go on and face Spain in the semis.  This is no Egyptian side, and thus, the Americans will need an even better performance.  If their previous performances against top level teams i this tournament is any indication, their Cinderella story may not last as long as they may have hoped for.
