This happened years ago. I saw it on a WRC race recap. They survived it. The driver was interviewed and he said it was a jump they expected to pull off, but they had not realized that the car's rear spoiler had come off during a previous tangle with a tree. With the spoiler, designed to force the rear of the car down, missing the rear floated up causing the nose dive. Those spoilers do serve a purpose on a WRC machine, but won't do much for your 89 civic

Warren, actually I think rally racing is one of the best sports in motorsports. The talent and skill that is required to race those cars like they do is simply amazing. It blows away many other more successful motorsports in this light even though they may be more popular. It's also a testament to the safety precautions taken in rally racing that arguably the most well known ambasador of it was not killed in a rally accident, but a helicopter accident. Most fans of NASCAR would know that barrel rolling is actually a good thing. It is energy being released. Real problems occur (as in Pardo's crash) when the vehicle comes to a sudden stop….so the driver might have a couple of bruises but I'm sure he lived to race again.
