TPS NFL Weekly Locks: Week 2
Total Pro Sports – Last week we went 2-2 with the Redskins pulling off a late cover on Chris Cooley‘s touchdown grab and the Vikings using Peterson’s three touchdowns to get the job done against the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately for us, the Texans seemed to have taken a step backwards, rather than the expected step forward this season, while the Patriots and Tom Brady decided to spot the Bills an 11-point lead before deciding to step it up a bit. With that being the first week, we find ourselves at 2-2 on the year. Not the best start, but surely not the worst.
With a week behind us, we now have a better idea of which teams have come to play in the 2009 season, and which are just along for the ride. He is how we see week 2 shaping up.
Game: New England Patriots @ New York Jets
Pick: New England Patriots -3 1/2
Reason: The Jets proved that they will not be taking a step back this year with rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez at the helm, but their test this week will be far greater than any other as they head home to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. The Jets were able to shut down the run and get to the quarterback against Houston, but will they be able to do that to the Pats? Another thing to remember is that Sanchez will be going up against mastermind Bill Belichick, who will look for ways to rattle the inexperienced starter in front of the home town fans. Look for Brady to be on target from the start and the Pats to come out with the win and the cover.
Game: Baltimore Ravens @ San Diego Chargers
Pick: Baltimore Ravens +3
Reason: San Diego looked rather weak in last week’s Monday night game against the Oakland Raiders. We expect them to come out harder in their home opened this week, but their offense should have an even more difficult time finding space against the Ravens defense. As for when Baltimore has the ball, if we learned one thing last week it was that their offense is no longer one-dimensional. The Chargers had a tough time keeping Oakland off the board. Things are not about to get any easier with the Ravens coming to town. I would expect this game to be a close one, and although it could go wither way, I don’t see the Ravens losing by any more than three points here. Baltimore and the points is the bet to make in this one.
Game: New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys
Pick: Over 44 1/2
Reason: This Sunday night match-up between NFC East rivals will mark the first game played in the new Cowboys Stadium and it should be a good one. Last week in their game against the Bucs, the Cowboys defense looked susceptible to both the pass (276 yards) and the run (174 yards) allowing a total of 450 yards and 21 points to the Tampa Bay offense. That bodes well for Eli Manning, Brandon Jacobs and company when they head into Dallas. Tony Romo has always been strong in the month of September and that was apparent last week when he threw for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns. His success should continue against a banged up Giants secondary, which will likely make for quite the high scoring game. We like the points to pile up on the scoreboard in this one and the game to go easily over the total.
Game: Indianapolis Colts @ Miami Dolphins
Pick: Miami Dolphins +3
Reason: The Dolphins were a huge disappointment last week as they were terrible in Atlanta. This Monday they will look to turn things around when they head home to take on the Colts. The Colts looked impressive last week, beating up on the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the should be in for a tougher match-up this week. Peyton Manning will be without one of his main targets in Anthony Gonzalez and it should be interesting to see how well he responds to that. The Jags were able to keep things close last week and the Dolphins should do the same. You should also keep in mind that home underdogs tend to have quite a bit of success on Monday Nights (both covered last week).
