The Stat Line Of The Night – 10/01/09 – Alex Ovechkin
Total Pro Sports – Last night marked the beginning of the 2009-10 NHL season and after last year’s disappointing end, Alex Ovechkin was looking to make an early statement that he and his Washington Capitals are back for revenge. Their first victims were Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins, and you can only hope that the rest of the league took notice.
Ovechkin led the way with two goals and an assist as his Caps easily disposed of last year’s President’s Trophy winners by a score of 4-1. For his entire 20:14 of ice time, Ovie was a force to reckoned with, causing all kinds of problems for the Bruins defense and recording a total of five shots. Top line center Nicklas Backstrom also recorded three points of his own, but at the end of the night it was Ovechkin’s star which would shine brightest as he earned “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Thursday, October 1st, 2009.
Expect the Capitals to be a top contender this season as they will be even hungrier to make a deep run into the playoffs after blowing a game seven opportunity at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins in May. Ovechkin will not want to lose another battle to Sidney Crosby and the Pens throughout the course of this season, including the one for the NHL scoring title. Tonight was a good start.
