2009 MLB Playoff Previews and Predictions
Total Pro Sports – The MLB playoffs are set to begin today and after the outstanding performance put on by the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers last night during their play-in game, we expect things to only get better from here on out.
Here is a look at how we see things shaping up over the course of the next month.
National League Division Series:
Colorado Rockies vs. Philadelphia Phillies (begins Wednesday at 2:30 pm ET)
The Phillies seemed to be comfortably in a playoff position for the past couple of months while the Rockies had to fight to get to the top of the wild card standings and stay there. while that momentum may help the Rockies keep this series close, they do not have the bats or the pitching to keep up with the Philadelphia. Boasting a rotation that includes the likes of Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and J.A. Happ, expect the Phillies to outlast the Rockies in this series.
Prediction: Phillies in 4
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (begins Wednesday at 9:30 pm ET)
With the NL Central locked up, the Cards packed it in early and seemed disinterested at times down the final stretch, going 2-8 over their final 10 games. Those games may seem meaningless, but the slide cost the Cards home field advantage in the first round, and set them up to face the Dodgers. While it may not be the match up they were looking for, you have to like the 1-2 punch of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright on the mound. With those two scheduled to pitch at least three of the five scheduled games in the series, the Cards should be able to overcome the Dodgers and their fans.
Prediction: Cards in 5
American League Division Series:
Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees 9begins Wednesday at 6pm ET)
The Twins punched their ticket to the 2009 MLB playoffs in dramatic fashion after defeating the Tigers in extra innings during their play-in game. As a reward they will have to take on the New York Yankees who posted the leagues best record. The Twins may be the hottest team in baseball at the moment, but don’t expect that to get them through to the next round.
Prediction: Yankees in 5
Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels (begins Thursday at 9:30 pm ET)
Two teams with strong rotations and big bats, this could be one of the closest series to call. The Sox seem to have the edge when it comes to the bullpen, so the Angels will not want it to come down to that. Look for this to be a tough battle for both teams, but it may finally be time for the Angels to get over their slide against Boston in the playoffs.
Prediction: Angels in 5
World Series Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Angels in 6
