2009 NHL Power Rankings: Week 9

by: AnthonyP On  Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Dennis Wideman & Tim ThomasA tonne of movement for week 9 in the NHL Power Rankings with all but four teams moving spots. However, despite all the movement, the top 3 of San Jose, Pittsburgh and Washington stayed the same with New Jersey jumping into the top 5.

Red ArrowThe biggest loser in our NHL Power Rankings this week were the Florida Panthers dropping a staggering 5 spots to end up at #28. After making a push for the playoffs last year people looked to the young Panthers team to get off to a decent start this season but so far they’ve disappointed and are running out of time to make up ground in the competitive Eastern Conference.

Green ArrowThe biggest gainer in our NHL Power Rankings this week were the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins both climbing up 5 spots to land at #13 and #14 respectively. The Predators were a wild card coming into the season and so far they’ve solidified themselves as legit playoff contenders as they sit second in the central division. The Bruins on the other hand were expected to compete with Pittsburgh and Washington for top spot in the East but so far have disappointed but have shown signs in the last few games of turning things around.

Lets take a look at the rest of the league: NHL POWER RANKINGS for week 9.

2 Pittsburgh Penguins 18-9-0 - Sidney Crosby finally got things going last week collecting 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points, good enough to earn 1st Star honors.
3 Washington Capitals 15-5-6 - Things should get interesting as the team will likely be without Alexander Ovechkin again either due to injury or suspension after his knee-on-knee hit to Tim Gleason.
4 New Jersey Devils 17-6-1 Green Arrow3 Martin Brodeur‘s middle name must be Merlot because like a fine wine he appears to be getting better with age. Last week Brodeur posted a 0.97 GAA and .963 SAV% in his three victories which got him the 2nd star of the week honors.
5 Calgary Flames 16-6-3 Red Arrow1 Are on a nice little roll winning their last three games in a row.
