Derby was fake in the 70’s, now it’s as real a sport as anything else.
Hot ladies in skimpy outfits with silly names just happens to be a bonus – and the key difference in why derby is the only sport that doesn’t bore me to tears.
I feel compelled to point out that modern roller derby, for all its flare and show boating, it NOT fake like WWE. The athleticism, bruises, and physical nature of the sport is real,it’s not staged; this isn’t derby from the 70s. There are moments like this, but they’re spontaneous, not scripted in.

Opposing derby girls are usually friends before and after the game – it’s a small world. These chicks aren’t wearing their safety gear, must be BEFORE or AFTER the bout. Get out of the house!!

Have you ever actually gone to a modern day Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby game? There is nothing fake about it and the athletes train hard to play hard. They also spend alot of time together off the track and are bound to be good friends who love to have fun also. This image is likely a couple of teammates celebrating a victory.
Last time I check roller derby girls weren’t hitting each other with metal chairs, they aren’t jumping off 10 to 12 feet in the air & landing on their backs. these guys & girls are not small people. Granted it is scripted but the falls are just as real & if it weren’t scripted they kill each other. Your comparing apples & oranges. Respect each others sport their all athletes that have had to work their a$$es off to get where their at.

Uh, no. Actually roller derby is not scripted. It is an actual sport. Winners are not predetermined at all. It is nothing like pro wrestling whatsoever.
Speaking as an honest-to-God rollergirl with two concussions, a currently effed-up knee, and countless, colorful bruises under her belt, I feel pretty qualified to say that the neanderthal who posted this has not only never seen a bout, but has done absolutely no research into roller derby other than watching that one roller derby porn. Grow the fuck up, and then come to a bout and see how wrong you are.
If the you don’t have the guts to skate with the girls, then keep your mouth shut.
By the way, how often do we see male sports players spanking each other on the ass to intimate a good play? In football alone, I see more ass slapping than I do received passes, yet we don’t doubt the legitimacy of that sport.
The women of derby realize how simple men are. We know that if we show a little T&A men will buy their first ticket to a bout. Once you watch the sport, though, you’ll be hooked and keep coming back. It’s as simple as that.
Celebrating fun times or a victory is totally acceptable and this picture is just that in such context. Check out a game in person for yourself before jumping to conclusions. The skaters of modern derby train hard, play hard and still know how to have fun (see pic)…all while running their leagues themselves and NOT at the hands of some corporation. I dare you to go check out the league closest to your home and see for yourself.

Obviously roller derby isn’t a real sport. Real athletes get paid money and endorse pepsi products, whereas derby girls do it for, gasp, the love of the sport.
Google WFTDA- you will see that roller derby is nothing like WWE Wrestling- it’s ALL real. Nothing is choreographed- it is an actual sport. Please get your facts straight.
There’s nothing scripted or fake about derby… This is a serious, legitimate sport. Those who say otherwise obviously haven’t done their research. *shrug*
Ha! Can we really expect anything intelligent to come from a person going by “DA MAN” and readin this site? Enough said right there. Just instigators–as the internet has tons of people writing mean, nasty things on all different topics of discussion-from “let’s pick on this celebrity today” to the healthcare debate. The mean, unfounded, baseless comments usually comes from one’s own insecurities. That’s too bad for them I guess.
Suit up and skate if you think roller derby is so fake and you will see how fast you will get knocked on your a$$. Those of us in derby live and breath this sport everyday and for someone who knows nothing about the sport you are just ignorant. All the ladies in derby are sisters on and off the field it is never the intention in a game to hurt a fellow player but like with all sports brusies and cuts do happen but a derby girl wears her bruises as a badge of honor.

Most of these women have a valid point. Roller-derby is tough, athletic, and competitive. I don’t dispute that. But guess what? SO IS WRESTLING!!! Sure, the end is pre-determined. But I’ve seen many derby women cross over into pro-wrestling, and guess what? Most of those women weren’t able to athletically hack it.
All these skaters have done is show a hypo-critical ignorance to any other sport besides their own. The movement wants to be considered legit, but doesn’t want to hold itself to any other sport’s standards. Stop being close-minded. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Women’s soccer doesn’t show T&A. Neither does Women’s basketball. Derby is probably the only sport that advertises itself as “Hot” and “Sexxy”. Why can’t women’s derby hold itself to the same standard that other women’s sports do?
Roller-Derby to this day shares many aspects of pro-wrestling. The fake names, Referee’s with stage names, entrance music, smack-talk that’s purposely made to generate interest. Athletes who get the spotlight due to their personality, charisma, or looks, and not athletic ability. I can’t even count how many leagues plaster the image of their prettiest skaters on their posters, and not the toughest people in their league.
All this self-righteousness only hurts the positive aspects of roller- derby. Why don’t all of you practice what you preach, and study what you’re arguing against. Otherwise, you’re just killing the credibility that every skater has sacrificed, and worked so hard for. Many women gave their bodies to derby, and some don’t walk the same in their post-derby life.
Don’t disrespect the many men and WOMEN who have *ALSO* sacrificed their bodies for the credibility of their sport. you don’t hear them whining when people call them fake. Even when their athletics are VERY real.
That’s because wrestling IS fake. Yes, most of the athletics are real, but it’s all scripted, unlike roller derby. That’s what we’re disputing. Nobody said anything bad about wrestling, just that roller derby is nothing like it, which is a fact.
I can tell you for sure today’s Derby is not fake. It was not fake at it’s inception back in 1935 either. but once the promoters got hold of it, it did take on a Globe trotter type atmosphere for a decade of so, to try to make money for the promoters. But to day it is the fasted Growing Sport on the Planet. and is owned and operated by the same Alpha Women that play the sport. Get some friends together, and go catch a Bout, before you go off half coked, and make your self look like a dumb ass.–and I mean that in the kindest way possible. Feel me??
There are legitimate roller derby leagues everywhere, and then there are some who still play into the 70s stereotype. There are similarities but there are vast differences. Similarities in that we’re on skates, that’s it.
There are some legit leagues who also play up the T&A aspect, but there are others who shun that particular manner of marketing, as well…
I’ve been doing this for 4 years and I’ve seen both sides…most of the ones at this point who are ranked or worth a damn are the ones who forego fishnets for yoga pants, pushup bras for sports jerseys and slap n tickle for johnny crashes and strategy. Just sayin.
