The Stat Line of the Night – 3/8/10 – Edwin Ubiles

Edwin UbilesFor most people college basketball’s championship week won’t start until Thursday and Friday.  For those in smaller conferences, it began a few days ago.  Last night, with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship on the line, the Sienna Saints rallied from a 39-28 halftime deficit to defeat the Fairfield Stags and capture their 3rd straight MAAC championship.  Edwin Ubiles performance was a huge factor in the Saints win.

Ubiles scored 27 points on 10-20 shooting, hitting 5-6 free throws, 2 from downtown, and a highlight real slam dunk.  Ubiles and teammate Alex Franklin combined for 49 of Sienna’s 72 points.  The Saints were down by double digits early in the second half, but battled back on the shoulders of Ubiles to snatch the lead with 2 minutes in the game.  Although Fairfield was able to force an overtime period, it was clear that the Saints controlled the tempo and that their athletic wingmen, Ubiles and Franklin, were not going to let them lose.

The Saints have a 38-game home winning streak going, and they looked very good last night.  Unfortunately for them, they won’t be playing at home come tourney time and they definitely will be playing teams of a higher caliber than Fairfield.  Whether Ubiles can show up in the dance still remains to be seen, but for the time being, he gets “The Stat Line of the Night”.
