Fan Attacks Backup Goalie During KHL Action (Video)
There is no denying the fact that things can get pretty crazy on the ice in the Kontinental Hockey League, but perhaps nothing compares to what we have seen happening on the benches. Last time it was the backup goalie dishing out the punishment. This time it is the backup goalie taking it.
During an opening round playoff game between Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg and Salavat Yulaev Ufa, backup goalie Vitaly Kolesnik was attacked by an Avtomobilist fan. The out-of-control spectator was able to get close enough to the visiting team’s bench to get his hands on a stick and strike Kolesnik in the head with it. Cameras caught the rest of the Salavat team looking for retribution on the assailant before he was taken away by security.
Kolesnik was rushed off the ice and taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion. The Salavat team left the playing surface following the incident, but eventually returned, only to suffer a 4-3 defeat to the home team. They still hold a 2-1 lead in this best-of-five series, but it appears as though now they have more to fear than just the Avtomobilist team, as long as their fans are still lurking in the stands.
