AHL Coach Jim Playfair Loses His Cool
Just like his name indicates, all Jim Playfair really asks for is that you play fair. And if you don’t, the Abbotsford Heat bench boss will mutate into the “Playfair Monster” and destroy everything in his path. Referee Jamie Koharski found that out the hard way on Saturday night.
During a game between the Heat and the Hamilton Bulldogs, Koharski called for a penalty after Abbotsford forward J.D. Watt crashed into the Bulldog’s netminder. Believing that he had only been assessed a two-minute minor for goalie interference, Watt began to make his way to the penalty box, but upon arriving there was informed that he had been given a 5-minute major for charging and a game misconduct.
As you would expect, Watt was infuriated by the call and had to be escorted off the ice by a linesman, but it was nothing compared to what those in attendance would witness from Playfair. After being made aware of the call on the ice, he erupted into a giant ball of anger, smashing a couple of sticks over the boards and ripping off his jacket in his own Hulk-like style.
Surprisingly, when it was all said and done and Playfair’s blood returned to below-boiling levels, the two sticks were all that would make their was onto the ice. It was not quite like some of the other messes we have seen coaches make, but when it comes to pure rage, no one does it quite like Jim.
