The Stat Line of the Night — 4/4/10 — Kevin Youkilis
For those of you who are not huge basketball or hockey fans, the stretch between the Super Bowl and baseball’s opening day can seem like an eternity. That eternity finally ended last night, with the Yankees facing the Red Sox at Fenway Park to start the season. The game did not disappoint, as the Yankees blew a 5-1 lead in a shootout with the Sox. Kevin Youkilis picked up right where he left last season off with a great game.
Youkilis went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a triple. He had 2 RBIs and 3 runs in the winning effort. His biggest play of the night, however, came on a passed ball. With the score tied up at 7-7 with two outs in the 7th inning, Youkilis doubled the ball to deep left center. He then reached 3rd base on a wild pitch by Damaso Marte and scored on a passed ball. It wasn’t exactly the cleanest of plays, but it got the job done in a wild one, helping the Red Sox go on to win 9-7.
Although the official opening day for most teams is today and tomorrow, last night was the beginning of summer for a lot of people. The matchup between the Red Sox and Yankees looks to be extremely competitive this season as both teams are fielding excellent squads once again. Kevin Youkilis is coming off a great season and showed with his effort last night, which earned him “Stat Line of the Night”, that he is hoping to pick up right where he left off last season.
