Wings Fans Document Octopus Tossing, Subsequent Jail Time In Phoenix
Octopus tossing has become a playoff tradition in Detroit (a.k.a. Hockeytown USA), but taking this tradition outside the confines of the Joe Louis Arena can be a little more risky than you would think. A few men from Los Angeles decided to do just that, taking their show on the road to Jobing.com Arena in Glendale for Game 2 of the best-of-seven series between the Wings and the Coyotes.
Things appeared to be going just as planned. After sneaking several miniature octopi into the arena, the perfect opportunity to toss them came with just under four minutes left in the third period and Detroit up 5-4. The gesture had the Wings fans in attendance cheering loudly and sending high-fives around, but the Phoenix fans and police were a little less impressed, to say the least.
The act landed one of the men in jail, forcing his friends to raise $500 in order to bail him out. I’d hate to imagine what the damage would have been had they used a Don Cherry-sized octopus.
Luckily, the entire episode was documented for all to enjoy.
