Justin Upton has struggled a bit this season early, and so have his Diamondbacks. Coming into last night the Arizona Diamondbacks were last place in the NL West and beginning a series with the Yankees that seemed sure to end badly for them. Upton had other plans, however, and Arizona was able to overcome the Yanks’ potent lineup with just a few swings of his bat.
The D-Backs hit 42 points better as a team at home, and it showed in last night’s game. Upton and his teammates Adam LaRoche and Mark Reynolds all smacked first inning home runs to open up an early 5-0 lead. Upton wasn’t done, however as he would go on to homer again in the 8th inning to help stick a dagger in the 10-4 victory. He would finish the night 3 for 3 and score 4 runs while knocking in 4 RBIs. He also drew a walk and was able to steal a base off of AJ Burnett and Jorge Posada.
The Diamondbacks host a myriad of young talent but it just hasn’t seemed to all come together yet. Their youth shows especially on the road, where they have crumbled to the tune of a horrendous 10-27 record. If Upton and his fellow youngsters Chris Young, Stephen Drew, Mark Reynolds can continue to mash the ball but also raise their averages and on-base percentages, this team has a shot in the future. All may be lost this season, however, but at least Upton can enjoy “The Stat Line of the Night”.
