The Stat Line of the Night — 7/6/10 — Johan Santana
The Mets have had their ups and downs this season, but it seems as though every time Johan Santana takes the mound, the Mets bats go silent. He is sporting a 3.15 ERA with a measly .239 batting average against him, however he was only 5-5 going into last night’s game. Santana didn’t need any help from his offense in yesterday’s game, however. He was able to do it all himself on the mound and at the plate.
Santana lined his first major league homerun in the 3rd inning, which was all that he needed. He pitched a complete game shutout against the Cincinnati Reds, going the full 9 innings and giving up only three hits and three walks the whole night. He struck out 5 en route to the 3-0 Mets win. It only took him 113 pitches to get the job done, 78 of which were strikes. Unfortunately with the Mets offense the way its been for Santana, he wasn’t entirely confident the gem would be enough, so he lined one at the right field foul screen for the home run.
The Mets are in a precarious position in the NL East They are 2 games behind the surprising Braves and look poised to make a solid run down the stretch. Their offense has been inconsistent at best and they will have to take full advantage of Santana’s gems every chance they get. For now, Johna Santana wins the “Stat Line of the Night”.
