Pepe Reina Opens EPL Season With Embarrassing Own-Goal
After seeing their national team bow out early in what was a rather disappointing World Cup performance, English soccer fans have been patiently waiting for the Barclays Premier League season to kick off. And with a full slate of opening week games taking place over the weekend, perhaps none were more anticipated than the battle between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Just when it appeared as though Liverpool was prepared to make amends for their disappointing seventh place finish last season, a gaff by goalkeeper Pepe Reina would have fans of The Reds saying to themselves, “not again.” After holding on to a 1-0 lead while playing a man down for more than half the game, it looked like Liverpool was about to start the season off by earning an important three points, but in the 90th minute, a shot off the goalpost from Marouane Chamakh bounced directly out to Reina, who attempted to cradle the ball, but guided it into his own net instead.
One week in and already English soccer fans are being reminded of the demons that haunted the net of Robert Green in South Africa.
