The Stat Line of the Night — 9/21/10 — Clayton Richard
San Diego is in a tight race to win the division right now. The NL West is completely up for grabs, as the Giants are clinging to a half game lead and it looks like it could come down to the last day of the season. With that as the backdrop, hopes were not high for Padres fans with Clayton Richard taking the hill, as he has lost his last 4 starts. Things would turn around for Richard in a big way last night, however. He pitched a gem and led the Padres to a 6-0 victory.
Richard pitched a complete game shutout. It took just 105 pitches, 71 of which were strikes, to eliminate the Dodgers mathematically from contention and get the victory. Richard struck out 6 and gave up 8 hits and 2 walks en route to the win. Fourteen of his 27 outs were on ground balls and it looked like the Dodgers could not get anything going all night. A little help from Ryan Ludwick, who had 4 RBIs for the Pads, was all that was needed.
Now the last 2 weeks of the season will be crucial, and getting Richard off his slump may be a key to the Padres success. Their pitching is what got them here all season and they will need it down the stretch. For now, Richard takes home the “Stat Line of the Night”.
