It was not a good weekend to be a football player. We already showed you one scary moment from this weekend’s gridiron action and here is another, which occurred during Saturday’s game between Rutgers and Army.

Eric LeGrand, a defensive lineman for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, was on the field looking to make a play on special teams, just as he has done so many times before, but this play would turn out to be much different than any he had made in the past.  After making his way down the field and delivering a hard open-field hit on Army’s Malcolm Brown, LeGrand fell to the ground and remained there for several minutes as trainers attended to him.

Both teams stood by and watched as LeGrand was carted off the field.  He was taken to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to stabilize his spine.  He is currently resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center where he will remain for some time.

It is just another reminder of how violent the sport of football can be at times.  We the viewers have the luxury of tuning in from the comfort of our own homes each weekend, but rarely do we realize the danger that those playing the game put themselves in each and every time they step out onto the field.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eric and his family.  Hopefully it is not long before he is walking out of that hospital and onto the field prior to Scarlet Knights’ football game.

Hat Tip – [Dr. Saturday]
