Who Said You Have To Be A Goalie To Make A Great Save? (Video)
The Minnesota Wild’s Guillaume Latendresse may not be a goalie, but that didn’t stop him from making the save of the night during yesterday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Following some miscommunication by the Wild and a brutal giveaway by defenseman Greg Zanon, the Kings’ Ryan Smyth was left with an open net. It seemed to be a forgone conclusion that he would bury the puck home with goaltender Niklas Backstrom caught way out of position, but thanks to some last second heroics by Latendresse, that would not be the case.
After a hard backcheck, the Wild forward managed to slide across the net and use the blade of his stick to prevent Smyth from scoring in the open net. Contrary to what the commentators may have you believe, that puck was definitely not going wide (in the last replay you can see the puck coming in from an angle that would have placed it just inside the post).
Latendresse has scored a total of 76 goals in his NHL career, but it is the goal he prevented last night that has us most impressed. Here it is for your viewing pleasure.
