Wisconsin Badger Checks The Net, Gets Costly Penalty For It (Video)
Any hockey coach will tell you that the net is a great source of protection from the opposition. Defencemen often use it to escape the pressure of opposing forwards, as it forces oncoming forecheckers to go around it, or in the case of Wisconsin Badgers forward Craig Smith, through it.
With his No. 13-ranked Badgers trailing No. 10-ranked North Dakota by a score of 2-1, Smith was visibly frustrated, but rather than taking out those frustration on the opposition, as most hockey players typically do, he decided to take it out on the opposing net. The foolish play would earn him a 2-minute delay of game penalty (which North Dakota capitalized on), and a laugh from the North Dakota players and fans.
