Eric Abidal Helps Barcelona Advance After Being Struck In The Head With A Coin (Video)

by: JamieD On  Thursday, January 6, 2011

Soccer fans are the most ruthless in all of sports.  If the flare throwing and rioting wasn’t enough to convince you of such, the actions of Athletic Bilbao’s fans during a Copa del Rey match against Barcelona yesterday should do the trick.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, yesterday’s match shared a similar score in the second half when one incident changed everything.  While standing in front of his goal, Barcelona defender Eric Abidal was struck in the head by a coin.  He immediately fell to the ground and was attended to by trainers for several minutes before being taken to the sidelines.

However, that coin would turn out to be Abidal’s lucky penny as he returned to the game and exacted some revenge, scoring his first goal in a Barcelona uniform to put his club ahead by a score of 1-0.  Athletic Bilbao would add an equalizer, but it was not enough as Catalan giants would advance to the quarterfinals on away goals.
