Last night they met again, and while the fighting was down, the nastiness was still present, thanks to a somewhat questionable hit by Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara.
While racing for a loose puck along the boards near the team benches, Canadiens winger Max Pacioretty was able to chip the puck ahead into the Bruins’ zone, but he was unable to avoid the subsequent hit from Chara, which sent him head-first into the glass separating the benches. Pacioretty immediately hit the ice, where he lay motionless for several minutes before being stretchered off and taken to a nearby hospital.
Chara was assessed a 5-minute major for interference and a game misconduct. He is also set to speak with NHL vice-president of hockey operations Mike Murphy, who will then decide on whether a suspension should be handed out for the hit. As for Pacioretty, he was conscious and moving his extremities upon arrival at the hospital. He has since been diagnosed with a concussion and fractured vertebrae, and will be out indefinitely.
Here is another look at the incident. It will be interesting to see how the league deals with this.
