The Stat Line Of The Night — 5/4/11 — Devin Setoguchi

After winning the first two games at home, the San Jose Sharks traveled to Detroit with the opportunity put a stranglehold on the series with a Game 3 victory.  Unlike the first two games in San Jose, the Sharks were not necessarily the better team on the ice in this game, however, they did have the best player on the ice last night.  That player was Devin Setoguchi.

The Sharks forward started the scoring with a powerplay goal in the first period to put his team up 1-0.  He added another during regulation, but perhaps Setoguchi’s biggest contribution on the night was his third goal, which came 9:21 into overtime.  That goal would not only complete his hat-trick, but it would also give the Sharks the 4-3 victory and the 3-0 series lead.

Only three teams have ever come back from a 3-0 series deficit.  The Detroit Red Wings will now look to become the fourth, and they don’t have to look very far for some inspiration, as the Philadelphia Flyers were able to accomplish the feat against the Boston Bruins last year in the second round of the playoffs.  As for the Sharks, they are now only one win away from going back to the Western Conference Finals, thanks to a stellar performance from Setoguchi.  As a result, he earns our “Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, May 4, 2011.
