Most people will tell you that Dan Wheldon won the 100th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, but footage of the final lap will have you believing that the previous statement in only partly true. Sure, Wheldon may have been the first driver to be greeted by the checkered flag at the finish line, but that is largely the result of rookie driver JR Hildebrand losing the race, rather than Wheldon winning it.
So how does one “lose” the Indy 500? Simple. Crash out on the final turn of the final lap while holding a rather sizable lead.
