Anyone who has played baseball has heard of the expression “eating the ball.” It refers to a play where a fielder is better off not making a throw because he has little to no chance of getting the runner out, and therefore would be better off not risking a wild throw that would give the runner an extra base.
And with that being said, this is definitely a case where the third baseman should have “ate the ball.”
