The Stat Line Of The Night — 7/31/11 — Justin Verlander

by: JamieD On  Monday, August 1, 2011

Two of the American League’s hottest pitchers squared off yesterday afternoon at Comerica Park, as Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels visited Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers.  Both pitchers would remain hot, albeit, in very different ways.  Weaver was hot under the collar following the post-home run antics of Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen, and was eventually ejected in the seventh inning for throwing at the head of Alex Avila.

As for Verlander, he had the hot arm, allowing only one hit and two unearned runs while striking out nine in eight innings of work.  The Tigers’ ace entered the eighth inning with a no-hitter intact, but a throwing error (made by Verlander), a fielder’s choice and a single would prevent him from recording his second no-hitter of the season, and bring home two unearned runs for the Angels.  That was as close as the Angels would get, as the Tigers came away with the 3-2 victory and Verlander earned “The Stat Line of the Night” for Sunday, July 31, 2011.
