LeBron James Has Tim Tebow’s Back
The big debate at the Denver Broncos’ training camp has revolved around who should start at quarterback once the 2011 season begins. Should the Broncos give the job back to Kyle Orton, who started last season under center, or is it time for Tim Tebow to take over the starter’s role as the team looks to the future?
Most Broncos fans would argue that the future is now and the team needs to see if Tebow can handle the starting duties throughout the course of a full season, but ESPN’s Merril Hoge feels differently. He made those feelings public when he posted the following messages on Twitter:
Sitting watching tape of Bronco offense from last year! Orton or Tebow? It’s embarrassing to think the broncos could win with tebow!!
Orton or tebow? QB play is not just about who works hard gives rare rare college speeches or who is a good guy!! Because orton works hard and is a good guy as well.
It’s about who can play!! I just watched Tebow throw 5 out routes to a wide open WR! He was 1 for 5! 2 went in Dirt 2 in the stands!
That throwing motion he changed? U can’t change who u r! Just watched 2 throws and he throws like he did in college!!
You must possess a skill set to play! Tebow struggles with accuracy!
As you might have expected, Tebow responded by saying nothing more than “Hey Merril…’ppreciate that!”
But while Tebow remained rather calm and reserved in his response, LeBron James couldn’t seem to contain his anger and simply had to have his thoughts heard throughout the Twitterverse. Here is what the basketball star had to say about the Broncos’ quarterback:
Tim Tebow will succeed in the NFL. He’s a hard worker, a student of the game, a natural born leader and most of all a WINNER! It takes time and he’ll be nice
Listened to Merril Hoge today on [SportsCenter] and he was just blasting Tebow. The man hasn’t even play a full season and its only his 2nd year in.
Guys get on that TV and act like they was all WORLD when they played. How bout encouraging him and wishing him the best instead of hating!!
Thanks LeBron, but fourth quarter performances and quarterback play are probably two areas where your “expert advice” is lacking in validity.
Update: Merril has since stated that his comments were not meant to be personal and he hopes Tebow proves him wrong. So do the Broncos and their many fans.
