Stat Line Of The Night – 8/18/11 – Ricky Romero
You may not have noticed, but Ricky Romero is making a very good case to be inserted into the Cy Young discussions. While Justin Verlander is the clear leader right now, Romero is quietly putting together an amazing August that should have him in serious contention if he keeps it up.
Last night against the Oakland A’s Romero threw a complete game shutout, striking out six and walking two. It’s his fifth straight winning decision dating back to July 27. In August now, he has a 1.125 ERA over four starts, all wins, and has struck out 21 in 32 innings pitched. Since Romero’s ERA got up to 3.27 on July 21, he’s given up just four earned runs in 40-plus innings (0.89 ERA) and currently rests at a 2.72 ERA, good for fifth in the American League.
Romero has a better K/9 rate than Jered Weaver and if he continues to throw like he has in his last five starts, he will emerge as a legitimate candidate for the award for baseball’s best pitchers. For that, and his complete game shutout on Thursday against the A’s, Ricky Romero deserves our stat line of the day.
