Stat Line Of The Night — 8/31/11 — Jake Westbrook

Sitting 9.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for top spot in the NL Central heading into yesterday’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals needed to make the most of their next eight games, as five of them were against those very same Brewers they are chasing.  They were able to get the job done last night, thanks in large part to a solid effort from starting pitcher Jake Westbrook.

Westbrook not only got the job done on the mound, where he allowed three runs against (two earned) over five innings, but he did most of his damage at the plate with a fourth inning grand slam off Brewers starter Randy Wolf.  The game was tied 2-2 at the time, but Westbrook’s one-out homer put the Cards up 6-2 and they never looked back, en route to the 8-3 victory.

Westbrook may not have been “lights out” from the mound last night, but he didn’t need to be, as he provided his own run support, earning himself both the win and the “Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, August 31, 2011.
