Sparks Fly Off Alex Avila’s Mask (Video)
Sparks were flying at U.S. Cellular Field last night, and surprisingly, it had nothing to do with Ozzie Guillen or the White Sox inability to get their offense going against Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander. Instead, the sparks that could be seen flying behind home plate in the bottom of the eighth inning had everything to do with the fastball of Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit and the mask of Tigers catcher Alex Avila.
Avila took a blazing fastball off the mask during last night’s game, but rather than seeing stars, as you would expect most catchers to see after taking a 96 mph fastball to the face, he was seeing sparks, which were created when the ball made contact with the cage of his mask.
Here is a look at the incident.
