Slovenia’s Dare Vrsic Scores On A 40-Meter Free Kick (Video)
When Group C of the EURO 2012 qualifying stage was formed, many figured it would take a dream run for Estonia to qualify for the Final Tournament. With one game remaining, that dream appeared to be coming true for the country of 1.3 million, and it was turning into a nightmare for the other group hopefuls, namely Serbia.
Serbia’s nightmare continued on Tuesday, as they needed a win against Slovenia to finish ahead of Estonia and advance to the playoff round. Instead, they suffered a 1-0 loss thanks to a 40-meter free kick off the boot of Slovenia’s Dare Vrsic, which floated over the outstretched arm of Serbian goalkeeper Bojan Jorgačević and into the net.
As a result, Estonia now finds themselves one step closer to reaching the final stage of the European Championship for the first time in history. They will take on the Republic of Ireland in a playoff round next month to see who will book their ticket to the Ukraine and Poland next summer.
Here is a look at the goal by Vrsic that helped open the door for Estonia.
