Wild’s Cal Clutterbuck Punches A Referee (Video)
One week ago I said that soccer, not hockey, may be the toughest sport to officiate. After watching NHL linesman Darren Gibbs take a punch to the face from Cal Clutterbuck, I think I’d like to retract that statement.
The incident occurred during a fight between the Wild’s Clutterbuck and the Vancouver Canucks’ Maxim Lapierre. With Clutterback’s back to the Canucks’ bench, it appeared as though Lapierre was trying to pick him up and throw him into the bench. In an attempt to defend himself, Clutterbuck swung his left fist wildly and connected with the face of Gibbs, who was stunned for a moment but was able to shake it off and continue performing his duties.
Clutterbuck and Lapierre were both given 10-minute misconducts, while the league could be taking another look at this incident.
Here is another look at Clutterbuck punching Gibbs in the face.
