Stat Line Of The Night — 12/6/11 — Daniel Sedin
Stat Line Of The Night — 12/7/11 — Bafetimbi Gomis
Heading into the final match day of the UEFA Champions League group stage, Lyon found themselves three points behind Ajax for second place in group D. Not only did they need a win against Dinamo Zagreb, but they also needed Ajax to lose to Real Madrid in the other group match and they had to make up the seven-goal difference between themselves and the Dutch club.
Most would describe Lyon’s chances as “impossible,” and a 40th minute goal by Dinamo certainly didn’t help them. But only a few seconds before halftime, Lyon would begin their charge to the knockout stage, led by striker Bafetimbi Gomis. His goal just before halftime would tie the game at 1-1, and he would add three more after the half as Lyon routed Dinamo by a score of 7-1.
That scoreline, in addition to Real’s 3-0 victory over Ajax, helped Lyon complete the seemingly impossible feat, as they moved ahead of Ajax to advance to the knockout phase of the tournament. Gomis’ four-goal performance was a key factor in their success, and it earned him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, December 7, 2011.
