Stat Line Of The Night — 12/19/11 — Aldon Smith
When the voters come together at the end of the NFL season to decide who will be awarded with the “Defensive Rookie of the Year” award, some will say Von Miller of the Denver Broncos deserves it, while others may show their support for Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson. However, the frontrunner for the award at the moment may very well be San Francisco 49ers linebacker, Aldon Smith.
Smith demonstrated on national television why he deserves “rookie of the year” honors last night, as he proved to be a thorn in Ben Roethlisberger’s side every time he stepped onto the field. Smith finished the night with 2.5 sacks, three solo tackles, and one assisted tackle. And when he wasn’t busy taking Big Ben to the ground, he was putting pressure on the Steelers’ quarterback, which resulted in three interceptions by the 49ers secondary.
In the end, this battle between two of the league’s best defensive units went to the 49ers, as they came away with a crucial 20-3 victory and remain in second place in the NFC. Aldon Smith has been a key factor in their success on the defensive side of the ball all season, and his latest performance has earned him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, December 19, 2011.
