Coyotes’ Mike Smith Robs Marian Gaborik On A Penalty Shot (Video)
With just under two minutes remaining in overtime during last night’s game between the New York Rangers and the Phoenix Coyotes at Madison Square Gardens, Rangers forwards Marian Gaborik was sent in alone on a break-away before being hooked from behind by Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin. That resulted in a penalty shot for Gaborik, and perhaps the greatest save of the 2011-12 season, courtesy of Mike Smith.
Seemingly down and out following a Gaborik fake, Smith was somehow able to make a diving stick save to prevent the Rangers’ sniper from burying the puck in the empty net for the game-winning goal. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t do it a second time, as Gaborik scored in the shootout and the Rangers earned the victory.
But don’t let that stop you from appreciating Smith’s incredible save in overtime. Is this the save of the year right now?
