There is no arguing the fact that Roberto Carlos’ “improbable goal” during a Copa del Rey match in 1998 will forever be one off the most unlikely things you will ever see take place on a football pitch. However, I can’t help but think that Paul Owens‘ performance during a Northern Ireland Premiership game over the weekend will rank him a close second on such a list.
So what did Owens do to deserve such accolades? The Coleraine player scored a goal directly from a free kick, not once, but twice!
You’d think the Glenavon keeper would have been ready the second time he saw Owens set up for a corner kick, but that clearly wasn’t the case. However, he would get some redemption, as he prevented Owens from recording the hat-trick by punching his third corner kick attempt over the crossbar.
