Stat Line Of The Night — 2/13/12 — Joe Pavalski
Stat Line Of The Night — 2/14/12 — Jason Spezza & Ilya Kovalchuk
It isn’t often that I award the “Stat Line of the Night” to multiple individuals, but picking between last night’s performances from Jason Spezza and Ilya Kovalchuk was simply impossible. Allow me to explain.
Both Spezza’s Senators and Kovalchuk’s Devils find themselves battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and both of their teams were taking on teams near the bottom of the Easter Conference standings (Sens played the Lightning while the Devils played the Sabres). During their respective games, both players not only recorded points on all of their team’s four goals, but even the manner in which they tallied those points was identical, as Spezza and Kovalchuck each scored a hat-trick (which was capped off with an empty netter in both instances) and added an assist. Perhaps the only difference was Spezza’s Senators were able to hold on for the 4-0 shutout victory, while Kovalchuk’s Devils allowed a single goal during their 4-1 win.
Whatever the case may be, it is quite evident that both Spezza and Kovalchuk led their teams to similar wins with their identical stat lines, and as a result, they each earn “The Stat Line of the Night” for Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
