Stat Line Of The Night — 2/20/12 — Erik Karlsson
The monstrous breakout season of Erik Karlsson continued yesterday afternoon on Long Island, as the Ottawa Senators’ defenseman had his biggest offensive output of the season during a matinee game against the New York Islanders.
Karlsson entered the game with two three-point performances on the season, but he eclipsed that mark by scoring two goals and adding two assists during a 6-0 thrashing of the Islanders. He took only 1:08 to strike first, as his wrist shot from the corner of the rink somehow squeezed through the pads of Kevin Poulin to give the Sens the 1-0 lead. His second of the game would come just 13 minutes later, as his one-timer from the slot put the Sens ahead by a score of 3-0. He would later add two assists during the final period to cap off his career-high four-point performance.
Those four points now push Karlsson even further ahead in the defensive scoring race, as his 57 points this season are 17 more than the next best defenseman (Brian Campbell, 40 points). That alone should have the 21-year-old garnering some strong consideration for the Norris Trophy, but in the meantime, he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, February 20, 2012.
