This Day In Sports History (April 27th) – Nolan Ryan
It was on this day in 1983 that Nolan Ryan surpassed Walter Johnson to become the all-time leader in strikeouts. Ryan struck out his 3,509th batter to surpass the mark set by Johnson way back in 1927.
Entering the 1983 season, both Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton were in striking distance of the prestigious record held by Johnson. Both entered the campaign less than 75 strikeouts away from the mark and it was a race to see who would break it first. Ryan would go on to win that race less than one month into the season, with Carlton passing Johnson just a couple of weeks later.
In today’s game, with five-man rotations, pitch counts and specialists in the bullpen, pitchers are pitching a lot less innings that they used to, making Nolan Ryan’s 5,714 career strikeouts seemingly impossible to break.
Here is a look at Nolan Ryan’s Hall of Fame bio.
