The New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals just set the new mark for the longest playoff game this season, as Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal ended 14:41 into the third overtime after Marian Gaborik beat Braden Holtby with a quick shot from just above the goal crease. That goal gave the Rangers the 2-1 victory, and a 2-1 series lead.
The goal was Gaborik’s second point of the night, as he also assisted on Ryan Callahan’s goal 6:41 into the second period, which put the Rangers up 1-0 at the time. The Caps would respond less than five minutes later, as John Carlson sent a wrister over the blocker of Henrik Lundqvist and into the back of the net to tie things up at 1-1.
That resulted in an additional 54:41 minutes of hockey, on top of the 60 minutes that they were already scheduled to play. In case math isn’t your thing, that means they played a total of one hour, 54 minutes and 41 seconds of hard-hitting hockey before this happened.
