Stat Line Of The Night — 5/22/12 — Adam Wainwright
After undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the entire 2011 MLB season, Adam Wainwright has struggled to regain the form that saw him go 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA while finishing second in Cy Young voting in 2010. He entered last night’s contest with just two wins in his first eight starts and an ERA of 5.77, but he was finally able to show shades of his former self, and that was bad news for the San Diego Padres’ batters.
For the first time in 2012, Wainwright made it past the seventh inning, as he pitched nine innings of shutout ball while allowing only four hits and one walk against. He also recorded a season-high nine strikeouts, as the St. Louis Cardinals cruised to the 4-0 victory.
With the win, Wainwright improves his record to 3-5 while lowering his ERA to 4.78. He may still have some work to do in order to get back to where he was in 2010, but last night’s performance was a start, and it earns him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Tuesday, May 22, 2012.
