Much-Hyped “Dream Team” Documentary Airs This Wednesday (Video)
In case you’re not old and have no idea what the Dream Team is, I’m talking about the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team. It was a big deal at the time because the team was made up of one amateur and, for the first time ever, 10 active NBA players. And not just any NBA players, but the very best ones. We’re talking Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Chris Mullin, and John Stockton. Hell, even Shaquille O’Neal, then just a sophomore at LSU, almost made the team. Instead they went with Duke’s Christian Laetner to fulfill the amateur player requirement.
With that lineup, the Dream Team was hyped like you wouldn’t believe. People called them the best team every assembled in any sport, and they were made to sell everything from Gatorade to McDonalds.
But when the Barcelona Olympics actually arrived, the team actually lived up to the hype. They annihilated opponents by an average of 44 points per game, winning the gold medal in a walk.
So yeah, the Dream Team was a big deal. And to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Dream Team, the NBA has put together a little behind-the-scenes, dirt-dishing documentary cleverly titled “The Dream Team,” which will premier on NBA TV this Wednesday, June 13, at 9 PM EST.
Judging by this preview, it should be pretty awesome.
