It was on this day in 1977 that Seattle Slew won the 109th running of the Belmont Stakes.  With his win at Belmont, Seattle Slew became only the tenth horse in history to win the Triple Crown and with his 9 for 9 record, the first Triple Crown winner to finish the series undefeated.

In the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, Seattle Slew entered the race as a heavy favorite.  He would be challenged by Run Dusty Run, but would go on to win the race by 1 and three-quarter lengths.  At the Preakness Stakes, Seattle Slew would once again be in a tight race, this time beating out Iron Constitution by 1 and a half lengths.

At Belmont, the final leg of the Triple Crown, Seattle Slew won in a more convincing fashion, winning the race by four lengths to capture the Triple Crown.  Later that year was named the “American Horse of the Year.”
