It was on this day in 1994 that the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks in game 7 to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup.  This was the Rangers first championship since 1940, a span of 54 years.

The 1993-94 season was a banner season for the New York Rangers.  In addition to winning the Stanley Cup, they also won the Presidents trophy for having the best regular season record and set a franchise record with 112 points.  Also, Madison Square Garden played host to the 45th annual NHL All-Star game where Rangers goaltender Mike Richter was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

The Rangers cruised past the first two rounds of the playoffs, sweeping the Islanders and taking only five games to beat the Capitals.  The Conference championship round was a different story as New York and New Jersey battled through a hard-fought seven game series, with the Rangers coming out on top.  New York would go on to face Vancouver in the finals and beat them in a close seven game series.
