Stat Line Of The Night — 6/17/12 — Cristiano Ronaldo
Following a season that saw him score an incredible 60 goals in 55 games across all competitions with Real Madrid, Portuguese fans were expecting to see a similar scoring output from Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2012 European Football Championships. He had failed to live up to those expectations during matches against Germany and Denmark, but he did manage to erase all of the memories of missed opportunities from his country’s first two games of the tournament with an offensive outburst during Portugal’s critical group stage finale against the Netherlands.
The 27-year-old Portuguese captain was on the attack throughout much of the evening’s match, as he led his country’s offensive charge with a total of ten shots. And of those ten shots, five were on goal and two of them would elude Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and find the back of the net, helping his country erase a 1-0 deficit en route to the important 2-1 victory over the 2010 World Cup finalists.
With the win, Portugal finished with six points during the Group Stage of the tournament. That was good enough to secure second place in Group B, earning them a spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face the Czech Republic.
Advancing from the “Group of Death” is certainly an impressive feat for the Portuguese national team, but they certainly don’t want their Euro 2012 run to end there. Another performance like yesterday’s from Cristiano Ronaldo would likely go a long way towards ensuring that isn’t the case, as his brace against Holland earns him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Sunday, June 17, 2012.
